‘Practice’ was developed during a residency project with Norwich University of the Arts and the John Innes Centre Archive Collections.
I chose to focus on the JIC collections of botanical illustrations and explored how plants have been used throughout history for their medicinal and magical properties. Research into the plants and their uses led me to other areas of interest for me, particularly highlighting women’s work, folklore stories and magic.
‘Practice’ was a mini installation, creating an alter of plant study; it featured different craft items I had made, a crochet doiley, and alter cloth; along with collected items like stones, a trinket box that I was gifted, and spell jars created with found objects. Each object was selected for its sentimental meaning, whether it has been in my possession for a long time, or gifted to me, each item held some connection to my being. To complete the alter, I created a handmade herbal book - featuring studies of plants which I feel connected to and their uses.
‘Practice’ was on display as part of ‘Art & Science’ which showcased the works of the students who were involved in this residency, and some items from the collection which the group had selected for display.
